The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Maya pressed her **palm** against the warm stone of the ancient monument. She had discovered something incredible in her grandmother's garden—a tiny stone sphinx, no bigger than her hand, with emerald eyes that seemed to twinkle in the sunlight.
"Hello there," she whispered.
To her astonishment, the sphinx blinked!
"I've been waiting for someone like you," the little creature spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Zuri, guardian of riddles and dreams."
Maya's orange tabby **cat**, Mochi, crept through the garden flowers and sat beside her, purring softly. Zuri's stone wings fluttered.
"A cat! How wonderful," Zuri said. "Cats see magic that others miss."
Every afternoon that summer, Maya visited Zuri behind the old oak tree. They played hide-and-seek among the roses, and Mochi taught Zuri how to pounce on grasshoppers. Zuri shared stories of ancient Egypt and flying over pyramids under starlit skies.
"Why were you hiding in the garden?" Maya asked one day.
Zuri's emerald eyes dimmed sadly. "I was lonely. The other sphinxes said I was too small to guard anything important. They said I should just be a garden ornament."
Maya took Zuri's tiny stone paw. "Size doesn't matter. You're the best guardian I know. You guard my dreams and secrets."
Mochi licked Zuri's face, leaving a wet spot on the stone.
"See?" Maya laughed. "Even Mochi chose you."
Zuri's emerald eyes glowed brighter than ever. "I learned something important. The biggest treasures come in small packages, and the best friends are the ones who see you with their heart, not just their eyes."
That evening, as Maya carried Zuri inside for a tea party, she pressed her palm once more against the warm stone. Some magic was tiny, but that didn't mean it wasn't powerful.
Sometimes the most wonderful things are hiding right in your garden, waiting for someone brave enough to say hello.
