The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved exploring the magical forest behind her house. One day, a silver fox with emerald eyes appeared on the path.

"Follow me," the fox seemed to say, flicking its fluffy tail.

Lily followed past ancient palm trees until they reached a clearing. There sat a magnificent sphinx made of golden stone, her wings folded gracefully.

"I have waited many years for someone brave enough to solve my riddle," the sphinx spoke, her voice like wind chimes. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"

Lily thought hard. Then she remembered a book from school. "A person! Babies crawl, grown-ups walk, and old people use canes!"

The sphinx's stone face smiled. "Correct! You may pass to the enchanted garden."

But as Lily stepped forward, something shuffled from the shadows. It was a zombie!

Lily gasped, but the fox stood calmly beside her. The zombie wasn't scary at all. He had patchy green skin and mismatched buttons for eyes, but his smile was gentle.

"I've been alone so long," the zombie said sadly. "Everyone runs away before they can see I'm friendly."

Lily looked at the zombie's kind eyes. "Would you like to come with us? We're going to the enchanted garden!"

The zombie's face lit up. "Really? You'd be my friend?"

"Of course!" Lily took his hand, which was surprisingly warm. "Everyone deserves a friend."

Together—Lily, the fox, the sphinx watching proudly, and the new friend—they walked through the golden gate into a garden where flowers sang and butterflies left trails of sparkles.

Lily learned that day that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone to see their heart. And sometimes the best adventures lead to the most unexpected friendships.

The zombie, whose name turned out to be Zebby, became Lily's best friend. And every day, the silver fox would appear, ready for their next magical adventure.
