The Sphinx's Secret Friend
In a land where clouds were made of cotton candy and rivers flowed with strawberry lemonade, there lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike the old sphinxes who loved to ask tricky riddles, Cleo just wanted to make friends.
But everyone was afraid of her. Even the flowers would close their petals when she walked by!
One stormy night, Cleo huddled inside her favorite cave. Outside, lightning flashed across the sky like giant fireflies dancing. She loved watching the light show—but she was so lonely.
Then she heard a sniffle.
Cleo peeked around a rock. There, shivering in the corner, was a little bear cub named Barnaby. He was crying.
"What's wrong?" Cleo asked softly.
Barnaby jumped! "A talking lion-bird-thing!"
"I'm a sphinx," Cleo said gently. "And you're a long way from home."
Barnaby explained how he'd chased a butterfly and gotten lost. Now he was scared of the storm.
Cleo's heart felt warm. Someone needed her!
"I'll help you," she promised. "But first—" she winked, "you must answer my riddle!"
Barnaby gulped. "Okay..."
"What has feet but cannot walk, comes down from above but makes everything look up, and disappears when morning comes?"
Barnaby thought hard. The lightning flashed outside, illuminating his worried face.
"Nighttime!" he exclaimed.
"Correct!" Cleo cheered. "Now, hold onto my wing."
Together they braved the storm. Cleo used her keen sphinx eyes to spot familiar landmarks through the rain. When thunder boomed, Barnaby squeezed her paw, and she squeezed back.
They reached Barnaby's cave just as his mother was frantically searching for him.
"Thank you, sphinx!" she cried, hugging her cub tight.
Cleo started to leave, but Barnaby ran to her. "Will you be my friend?"
Cleo's eyes sparkled like the lightning outside. "I thought you'd never ask."
Every day after that, Cleo and Barnaby played together. The other animals saw how kind Cleo was, and soon she had more friends than she could count!
And the best part? Cleo never had to ask another riddle again—unless it was just for fun.
