The Sphinx's Secret Friend

pyramidspysphinxfriend

Leo pressed his eye to the golden pyramid's tiny crack. 'I'm a spy on a secret mission,' he whispered to himself. His grandfather had told him stories about the magical pyramid in their backyard, but Leo had never dared to explore it until today.

Inside, the air shimmered with sparkles like floating diamonds. Leo's sneakers crunched on sand that sparkled in every color of the rainbow. Suddenly, a riddle echoed through the passage: 'What has legs but cannot walk?'

'A table!' Leo called out.

'Wrong,' said a gentle voice. 'Try again.'

From the shadows emerged a sphinx—lion body, human face, giant feathery wings. But this sphinx wasn't scary. She had kind eyes and wore a flower crown made of daisies.

'I'm Cleo,' she said. 'I've been waiting 1,000 years for someone to answer my riddles correctly.'

Leo's heart raced. 'I'm Leo. Can I try again?'

Cleo nodded. 'What has keys but opens no locks?'

Leo thought hard. Then he grinned. 'A piano!'

Cleo's wings fluttered. 'Correct! You're the first friend who's ever solved my riddles.' She looked sad. 'Everyone else ran away or got scared. They thought I was a monster.'

'But you're not,' Leo said. 'You're just lonely.' He sat beside her paw. 'I'll be your friend, Cleo. I can come back every day.'

Cleo's eyes sparkled like stars. 'Really?' She handed him a golden scarab beetle. 'Take this. Whenever you need me, just squeeze it tight, and I'll hear you.'

Leo hugged the sphinx's giant paw. From that day on, Leo was no longer just a spy on adventures—he was a sphinx's best friend. And Cleo was no longer lonely.

Sometimes the best discoveries aren't treasures or secrets. They're friends who were waiting for you all along.
