The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily's pet goldfish, Sparkle, was not an ordinary fish. While other goldfish swam in circles, Sparkle loved to leap out of her bowl and splash around Lily's room when no one was looking. But Lily's favorite secret was that Sparkle could talk.

One afternoon, Sparkle whispered, "Lily, I heard about a magical sphinx who lives in the park. She knows the answer to every question!"

Lily's eyes grew wide. "A real sphinx? Like in stories?"

"She only appears to children who are brave enough to ask her three questions," Sparkle said, doing a little flip in the air. "Let's go find her!"

They sneaked to the park and followed a winding path until they reached a mysterious stone archway. Suddenly, a golden sphinx appeared before them. She had the body of a lion and the face of a wise old woman, with wings that shimmered like morning dew.

"Welcome, young traveler," the sphinx said in a voice that sounded like wind chimes. "I am Cleopatra. You may ask me three questions."

Lily thought carefully. "What is the most valuable treasure in the world?"

"A true friend," the sphinx answered. "For friends make ordinary days magical and difficult days bearable."

Sparkle nodded and asked the second question. "Why do I feel different from other goldfish?"

The sphinx smiled. "Because you are not different—you are special. Your curiosity and courage to explore make you unique. Never hide who you are."

Lily thought about her last question. She wanted to ask for unlimited wishes or magical powers, but then she looked at Sparkle. "How can I become the best friend possible?"

"By listening with your heart," the sphinx said, her wings glowing brighter. "True friendship isn't about having the same favorite color or liking the same games. It's about being there for each other, celebrating differences, and loving someone for exactly who they are."

As the sphinx disappeared, Lily hugged Sparkle. "I'm so lucky to have a friend as magical as you."

"And I'm lucky to have a friend who believes in me," Sparkle replied.

On the way home, they realized the sphinx had taught them something important: the best magic wasn't in answers or wishes, but in the friendship they already had. And that was the greatest treasure of all.
