The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lila loved secrets. She was the best **spy** in her whole school—she could find hidden candy, discover surprise parties, and track down lost kittens. But the biggest secret she ever found was waiting for her at the old beach behind her house.
One rainy morning, Lila spotted something strange sticking out of the sand. An old thick **cable**, black and covered in seaweed, stretched from the dunes right into the churning gray **water**. Lila had never noticed it before. The waves tugged at it like they wanted to pull it deeper.
"What are you hiding?" Lila whispered.
She followed the cable along the shore until it disappeared into a sea cave. Lila crept inside, water dripping around her ankles. There, sitting on a rocky throne surrounded by glowing pearls, was a creature she had only seen in books—a **sphinx**!
But this sphinx wasn't like the scary ones in stories. She was small, no bigger than Lila's golden retriever, with soft golden fur and the sweetest face. Her wings drooped sadly.
"I've been waiting for someone to find me," the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I'm Cleo, and I'm terribly lonely. I thought you might be another mean **spy**, sent to capture me."
"I'm a good spy!" Lila promised. "I only spy on secrets to help people."
Cleo's eyes lit up. "Then perhaps you can help me solve my riddle. I've been stuck in this cave for a hundred years because I can't remember the answer."
Lila sat down eagerly. "I love riddles!"
"I have a body but no heart," Cleo began. "I flow but never move. I give life but take nothing back. What am I?"
Lila thought hard. She looked at the cave walls, the glowing pearls, the **water** rushing past the old **cable**... and suddenly she knew!
"It's **water**!" Lila cried. "It runs everywhere and keeps everything alive!"
Cleo cheered and leaped into the air, her wings shining. "You're right! Now I can finally leave this cave!"
"Will you come back and visit?" Lila asked.
"Every day," Cleo promised. "And you'll be my official friendship **spy**, helping me discover all the wonders of your world!"
From then on, Lila and Cleo had the most magical adventures, and Lila learned that the best spies don't just find secrets—they find friends.
