The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Maya bounced the yellow ball against the wall, practicing her padel shots alone in the park. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of purple and orange. Nearby, an old stone fountain bubbled with crystal clear water.

Something sparkled in the corner of her iPhone screen as she tried to capture a photo of the beautiful sunset. Maya looked closer. There, sitting on the edge of the fountain, was a tiny creature no bigger than her hand—a miniature sphinx with tawny wings and wise golden eyes.

"You can see me?" the sphinx asked, surprised.

Maya nodded, too amazed to speak.

"I've been waiting hundreds of years for someone who notices magic," said the sphinx. "My name is Cleo."

Beneath the water's surface, a tiny goldfish with shimmering orange scales swam up and blew a bubble. "And I'm Finn!" the bubble seemed to say.

Cleo explained that she and Finn were guardians of forgotten wishes, trapped in the fountain since people stopped believing in magic. "We need someone who believes to set us free."

Maya's heart swelled with courage. "I believe in magic. What do I need to do?"

"Simply be our friend," Cleo said. "Play with us. Talk to us. Magic grows from friendship, not just belief."

So every day after school, Maya returned to the fountain. She showed Cleo and Finn her padel racket, explained how the game worked, and told them stories about her world. In return, Cleo taught her ancient riddles that made Maya think in wonderful new ways, and Finn performed beautiful water dances that sparkled like tiny stars.

One evening, as Maya laughed at one of Cleo's jokes, the fountain began to glow. Golden light swirled around them, and suddenly Cleo and Finn grew to full size.

"Your friendship has freed us," Cleo said, tears of joy in her wise eyes. "You've given us the greatest gift—someone who truly cares."

But instead of leaving, Cleo and Finn chose to stay. "Real friends don't abandon each other," Finn said. "We'll watch over you, and you can visit us anytime."

Now, whenever Maya plays padel in the park, she waves at the fountain, where two tiny guardians dance in the water and soar through the air, reminding everyone who takes the time to notice that magic is real—and friendship is the strongest magic of all.
