The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Ten-year-old Benny wanted to be a spy. He practiced by sneaking around his garden at night, wearing his dad's old black hat and carrying a plastic magnifying glass. One Tuesday evening, while investigating strange noises behind the old oak tree, he discovered something magical.
A tiny sphinx the size of a kitten sat curled on a mushroom, her golden wings shimmering like moonlight. Unlike the scary sphinxes in storybooks, this one had kind purple eyes and a friendly smile.
"I'm Cleo," she squeaked. "And you're very loud for a spy."
Benny gasped. "You can see me? I'm practicing for my future career!"
Cleo laughed, a sound like tiny bells. "I've watched you all week. You need more practice. Also, you're about to step on my friend."
Benny looked down. A snail with a shell patterned like a sunset was slowly crossing his path.
"This is Ferdinand," Cleo explained. "He may look like a regular snail, but he's actually a powerful wizard who was cursed." She leaned closer. "There's only one thing that can break the spell."
Benny's eyes widened. "A quest? Like in the stories?"
Cleo nodded. "Ferdinand must eat enchanted spinach grown under the full moon. It's in Mrs. Higgins' garden—but her bull, Buster, guards it day and night."
"Buster?" Benny gulped. "He's enormous!"
"Exactly," said Cleo. "But I've noticed something about Buster. He loves having his ears scratched behind his left horn. And he's secretly afraid of butterflies."
That's how Benny found himself creeping into Mrs. Higgins' garden that very night, with Cleo on his shoulder and Ferdinand in his pocket. The magnificent bull stood guard over a glowing patch of spinach leaves.
Benny approached slowly, his heart pounding. Buster lowered his massive head and snorted.
"Nice bull," Benny whispered, reaching toward the left ear.
Buster's eyes widened with delight as Benny scratched the perfect spot. The bull flopped onto his side like an enormous puppy.
Cleo grabbed several spinach leaves with her tiny paws while Ferdinand gobbled them up. Poof! The snail transformed into a wise old wizard with a magnificent white beard.
"Thank you, young friends," Ferdinand boomed kindly. He tapped Cleo with his wand, and she grew to human size.
"Now," said the wizard, "would you like to learn real magic instead of spy games?"
Benny grinned. "Being a magical adventurer sounds much better."
And so, the spy who practiced too loudly found something better than secrets: true friends and real magic hidden right in his own garden.
