The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily skipped through the golden grass, her spotted dog Barnaby bouncing beside her. They were searching for the legendary Wishing Well, said to grant one perfect wish to those with pure hearts.
The sun painted the sky orange as they reached the top of Wisdom Hill. There, carved from ancient stone, sat the Great Sphinx. His granite eyes twinkled mysteriously.
"Welcome, young one," the Sphinx rumbled kindly. "I have guarded this magical water for a thousand years. Tell me, what wish brings you here?"
Lily thought carefully. "I wish for something special, but I'm not sure what yet."
Suddenly, Barnaby growled softly. From behind a mossy rock stumbled a creature — greenish skin, tattered clothes, stiff walk. It looked like a zombie!
Lily gasped, but the little zombie looked frightened, not scary. He held out a wilting flower with shaking hands.
"P-please," he squeaked. "I just want a friend. Everyone runs away because I look different."
The Sphinx nodded wisely. "Appearances can deceive. What matters is the heart within."
Lily smiled warmly. "I'm Lily, and this is Barnaby. What's your name?"
"Zippy," the zombie whispered, surprised. "You're not scared?"
"Nope!" Lily said. "Want to see the Wishing Well with us?"
Zippy's face lit up. For the first time in his lonely life, someone saw him — really saw him.
The magical water in the well began to glow, reflecting their four forms: girl, dog, sphinx, and zombie. The Sphinx smiled.
"You have already made your wish come true," he said. "Friendship is the greatest magic of all."
And so Lily, Barnaby, and Zippy became the unlikeliest friends, teaching everyone that sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone brave enough to say hello.
