The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Milo was a small orange cat who lived in a city full of wonders. But his favorite place was the old park where a stone sphinx had sat for hundreds of years. The sphinx had the head of a lion and the body of a human, and Milo would curl up on its paw every afternoon to nap.

One day, Milo heard a tiny voice.

"Hello there, little friend."

Milo opened one eye. The sphinx's stone eyes were twinkling!

"I've been waiting so long for someone to visit me," the sphinx said in a rumbly, kind voice. "My name is Cleo, and I've been asleep for three hundred years."

Milo's tail puffed up with surprise.

Cleo laughed. "Don't be scared! I need your help. My sister is trapped in a fountain across the city, and I can't leave this pedestal. Will you help her?"

Milo nodded bravely. He was just a cat, but he had big courage.

"Take the cable car," Cleo said. "It goes all the way across the city. Look for the fountain with the golden water. My sister is the goldfish swimming there. She's under a sleeping spell. You must wake her before sundown!"

Milo raced to the cable car station. The shiny metal car swung high above the city, carrying him past rooftops and trees. His heart fluttered like a bird.

When he reached the fountain, Milo saw something amazing. The water shimmered like liquid sunshine, and in the center swam the most beautiful goldfish he had ever seen. Her scales were rainbow-colored, but she wasn't moving.

"Wake up!" Milo meowed. But she didn't stir.

He remembered what his mother always said: "Sometimes the smallest kindness can break the biggest spells."

So Milo did what cats do best. He curled up next to the fountain and began to purr. He purred the loudest, warmest purr he had ever purred—a purr that felt like sunshine and hugs and tuna fish all together.

The goldfish's tail twitched. Then her fins fluttered. Finally, she swam right up to Milo and said, "Thank you for waking me!"

"I'm Milo," he said softly.

"I'm Marina," the goldfish replied. "My sister Cleo sent you, didn't she?"

That evening, Milo rode the cable car back with a secret smile. The sphinx sisters were reunited, and Milo had learned something wonderful: even a small cat could make a big difference. From that day on, Milo visited his sphinx friend every afternoon—and sometimes, he could hear both sisters laughing in the wind, full of joy and gratitude.

And whenever Milo saw the cable car swinging across the sky, he knew that magic was real, as long as you were brave enough to believe in it.
