The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily discovered the hidden pool behind her grandmother's garden on a hot summer afternoon. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds, but what made her gasp was what floated in the center—a tiny goldfish with scales that shimmered in every color of the rainbow.
"Hello there," Lily whispered, kneeling on the mossy bank.
The goldfish didn't swim away. Instead, it rose to the surface and spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for you, Lily. I'm Finnick, and I need your help."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Magic water," Finnick explained. "But listen—the Great Sphinx who guards this pool has lost something precious, and she's too proud to ask for help. Will you be my friend and help me find it?"
Lily nodded without hesitation. She had always wanted an adventure.
As if summoned by their words, the stone sphinx at the pool's edge suddenly stirred. Her granite eyes opened, glowing with ancient wisdom. "Many have come seeking my treasure, but none have offered friendship. Perhaps you are different."
"What did you lose?" Lily asked bravely.
"My heart," the Sphinx said simply. "Long ago, I turned away a lonely bull who only wanted to drink from my pool. In my anger, I cursed myself to feel nothing—until someone kind would help another without asking for reward."
Finnick swam excitedly. "But Lily already agreed to help me!"
The Sphinx smiled, and stone cracked away to reveal golden fur. "Then the curse is broken. You see, little one—that bull was actually the Sun in disguise, testing my kindness. Because you helped Finnick without promise of treasure, you've taught me the true meaning of friendship."
The pool erupted with magic. Fireworks of light danced across the water. Finnick grew wings and became a dragonfish of pure starlight.
"Thank you, Lily," the Sphinx said, now fully transformed into a magnificent creature of gold and warmth. "You've given me back my heart, and a wonderful new friend."
From that day on, Lily visited the pool every summer. She learned that true magic isn't about spells or wishes—it's about kindness, courage, and being the kind of friend who helps without asking "what's in it for me?"
And sometimes, if you look closely at sparkly pools, you might just see a golden dragonfish and a grateful Sphinx, still waiting to make friends with someone whose heart is pure and brave.
