The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer day, she and her golden dog Sunny would race to the crystal-blue lake behind their house. Sunny would splash alongside, his paws paddling like little furry boats.

One magical afternoon, while diving deep, Lily spotted something glimmering at the bottom of the lake. It was an ancient stone sphinx, its lion body resting gracefully on the sandy floor. But this sphinx was special—instead of stone, its long flowing hair was made of swaying seaweed that shimmered in shades of emerald and aquamarine.

"Who awakens me?" a voice bubbled up like soft laughter.

Lily's eyes widened. "I'm Lily, and this is Sunny!" She pointed to her dog, who was doing his best to swim in circles with excitement.

The sphinx smiled. "I am the Guardian of Dreams. I've been sleeping for one hundred years."

Just then, a slow-moving creature emerged from behind the sphinx. It looked like a zombie—pale green skin, tangled hair, one eye open—but instead of being scary, it was dancing a funny little wiggle dance.

"This is Zimby," the sphinx explained. "He's not a scary zombie. He's a magical friend who moves slowly because he's always half-asleep and half-awake, dreaming beautiful dreams for the world."

Zimby wiggled over and offered Lily a glowing pebble. "For you," he mumbled happily.

Lily realized something wonderful: sometimes things that seem strange or different are actually special in their own way. Zimby wasn't scary at all—he was gentle and kind, just moving at his own pace.

Every day that summer, Lily and Sunny visited their new friends. The sphinx taught Lily about ancient magic, and Zimby shared his happiest dreams, which made flowers bloom along the lakeshore.

Lily learned that the best adventures come from keeping an open heart—and that friends come in all shapes, sizes, and speeds, even underwater dreaming zombies and sphinxes with seaweed hair.
