The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved exploring the old library behind her house. It was filled with dusty books and magical secrets. One afternoon, while peeking through a crack in the stone wall, she saw something amazing.

A giant sphinx sat in the hidden garden! It had the body of a lion and the head of a kind woman with sparkling eyes. Lily had read about sphinxes in books—they were guardians of ancient riddles and magical treasures.

The sphinx looked sad and lonely. Lily wanted to help, but she was scared. What if the sphinx was dangerous? She decided to be very quiet and watch from her hiding spot, like a little spy.

Every day for a week, Lily spied on the sphinx. She watched it guard a golden chest and read from an enormous book. The sphinx sighed often, and its voice sounded like wind chimes.

On Friday, Lily accidentally knocked over a stack of books. CLASH! The sphinx turned its head directly toward her hiding spot.

"Come out, little spy," the sphinx said gently. "I have known you were there all along."

Trembling, Lily stepped into the garden. "I'm sorry! I was just curious."

The sphinx smiled. "I am not angry. I am lonely. For one hundred years, I have guarded this treasure chest, but no one has ever wanted to be my friend."

"I'll be your friend!" Lily said bravely.

The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Then you must help me. The chest contains the most powerful treasure in the world—imagination. But it can only be opened by someone who truly wants to share it with others."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "Can we open it together?"

"Yes!" The sphinx beamed. "Friends share everything."

Together, they lifted the lid. Inside, thousands of glowing butterflies flew out, carrying stories and dreams to children all over the world.

"Now," said the sphinx, "you are not just my friend. You are the guardian of imagination too."

Lily hugged the sphinx's giant paw. She had discovered the best treasure of all—a magical friend who would last forever.
