The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. One rainy afternoon, she discovered something peculiar—a thick golden cable that seemed to shimmer in the dim light. Following it with her fingers, she traced it through a tiny mouse hole she'd never noticed before.

The cable led her through the wall into a hidden room bathed in moonlight. There, resting on a velvet cushion, sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten. Its small wings fluttered nervously as it looked up at Lily with enormous amber eyes.

"Please," the sphinx squeaked in a voice like chimes, "can you help my friend?"

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

"All magical creatures can talk," the sphinx said. "But poor Zomb was cursed by a grumpy wizard. Now everyone calls him a monster and runs away."

The sphinx led Lily deeper into the hidden room, where the golden cable stretched toward a corner. There, Zomb sat alone. He looked like a zombie—skin pale green, clothes tattered—but his eyes were kind and sad.

"Please don't scream," Zomb said softly. "I know I look scary."

Lily noticed Zomb was carefully weaving friendship bracelets from the golden cable. "You're making gifts?"

Zomb nodded. "The sphinx told me that if I do enough kind deeds, the curse might break. But everyone's too frightened to let me help."

"I'm not frightened," Lily said firmly. "What if we work together?"

For the next hour, Lily and Zomb made beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and even a crown for the sphinx. The sphinx purred with happiness, her golden fur glowing brighter with each gift they created.

Suddenly, Zomb's green skin began to turn a warm brown. His tattered clothes transformed into a bright tunic. The curse was breaking!

"Thank you for seeing who I really am," Zomb said, now smiling. "Not what I looked like."

The sphinx nodded wisely. "True friendship looks with the heart, not the eyes."

Lily returned home with her own golden cable bracelet, a reminder that kindness and courage could see past any monster's mask—and that the best friends are sometimes the ones who need help the most.
