The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily swung her baseball bat with all her might, and the ball sailed over the backyard fence. "Great hit!" cheered her grandmother through the iPhone Lily held to her ear.

Lily's orange tabby cat, Marmalade, suddenly stood up tall. His fur started glowing like sunshine!

"Lily," said a voice. But it wasn't her grandma's voice. It was Marmalade! The cat was talking!

"The magical sphinx needs your help," Marmalade said. "Will you come with me?"

Lily's eyes went wide. "Cats can't talk!"

"Magical ones can," Marmalade purred. "And you're magical too, Lily. I've known since the day you saved that goldfish from the carnival game."

Lily remembered the little goldfish she'd won and set free in the pond. She'd named him Splash.

Marmalade touched his nose to Lily's forehead, and suddenly they weren't in the backyard anymore. They stood before an enormous stone sphinx with shimmering eyes.

"I've been waiting for you," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I guard the doorway between worlds. But I'm lonely. Will you be my friend?"

Lily looked at the giant creature with the lion body and human face. The sphinx looked sad.

"Yes," Lily said. "I'll be your friend."

The sphinx smiled, and desert sand turned into flowers. "Thank you. Friendship is the strongest magic of all."

Every day after school, Lily visited her sphinx friend. They played catch with her baseball, and Marmalade taught the sphinx cat games. Sometimes Splash the goldfish would appear in magical pond water to say hello.

Lily learned that magic wasn't about wands or spells. It was about kindness, bravery, and being a good friend.

And the best friends, Lily discovered, sometimes come in the most surprising sizes — from tiny cats to giant sphinxes.
