The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily was running through the garden, her bare feet padding softly on the cool grass. Tears blurred her vision. The other children had laughed when she'd fallen during the race, and her heart felt heavy as a stone.

Her cat, Whiskers, dashed beside her, his golden fur glowing in the afternoon sun. He suddenly stopped and meowed urgently, tail pointing toward the old oak tree at the garden's edge.

"What is it, Whiskers?" Lily whispered, wiping her eyes.

The cat led her behind the tree, where a small stone sphinx sat half-buried in leaves. It was no bigger than a breadbox, with tiny wings folded against its back. Lily had never seen it before, though she'd played in this garden a thousand times.

The sphinx's eyes suddenly sparkled like tiny stars. A small voice, like wind chimes, filled her mind. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to notice me."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can talk, and I can see what's truly in your heart," the sphinx replied. "You're running away from something that hurt you. But the bravest thing isn't running away—it's standing tall and trying again."

Whiskers purred and rubbed against the sphinx's stone paw.

"A true friend doesn't laugh when you fall," the sphinx continued. "A true friend helps you up. Would you like to see something magical?"

The sphinx's wings spread, shimmering like moonlight. "Whiskers has been my friend for years, watching over this garden. Now you're my friend too. And friends never let friends face hard times alone."

Lily felt warmth spread through her chest. "Will you come with me?"

"Always," said the sphinx. "But first—your new friends at school? They might surprise you. Sometimes people don't know how to be good friends until someone shows them kindness first."

The next day, Lily stood at the starting line. When she stumbled during the race, a hand reached down to help her up—the same girl who'd laughed the day before. Sometimes, Lily realized, the sphinx was right. A little courage could change everything.

And whenever she needed reminding, she'd find Whiskers curled up beside the tiny sphinx, both waiting with the wisdom of true friends.
