The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Leo was a bear with a very big secret. Every night, when the zoo closed and the visitors went home, he would sneak to the Egyptian exhibit to visit his friend, the sphinx.

The sphinx wasn't made of stone like everyone thought. She was magical, and she only came alive at midnight. Leo would peek through the palm tree that grew near her exhibit, feeling like a little spy on a grand adventure.

"What brings you tonight, my fuzzy friend?" the sphinx would ask, her golden eyes glowing softly like fireflies.

Leo would shrug his great shoulders. "Just wanted to hear stories. Your riddles are better than honey."

One evening, something amazing happened. A small goldfish in the pond near the sphinx's feet swam to the surface and spoke! "The sphinx has been lonely for a thousand years. You are her first true friend."

Leo's eyes grew wide. He had never known the sphinx was lonely. She seemed so wise and strong with her lion body and human face, her wings folded elegantly at her sides.

"Will you tell me a riddle?" Leo asked, wanting to cheer her up.

The sphinx smiled, and it was like watching the sunrise. "What has a heart that doesn't beat?"

Leo thought hard. He pawed the ground. He looked at the stars. Then he had it!

"An artichoke!" he said proudly.

The sphinx laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "Wrong, but wonderfully creative. The answer is a painting. But your answer made me happier than any correct answer ever could."

From that night on, Leo never felt like a spy anymore. He was a friend, and friendship, he learned, was the greatest magic of all. Even better than coming to life at midnight or talking goldfishes or riddles that made you think.

Sometimes the best adventures aren't the ones we spy on from the palm trees. They're the ones where we show up exactly as we are—bears who need friends, sphinxes who need laughter, and goldfishes who know that being different is what makes you special.
