The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. One sunny afternoon, her golden retriever Max started barking at an old stone path they'd never noticed before.
"What is it, boy?" Lily whispered, following her faithful dog down the winding trail.
The path led to a clearing where a magnificent stone sphinx sat, its wings folded against ancient stones. But something strange moved beside it—a green figure shuffling slowly, its arms stretched forward.
Max growled, but the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "Don't be afraid. This is Zed, and he's not what you think."
The zombie-looking creature stopped shuffling. His eyes were kind, not scary. "I'm under a spell," Zed said softly. "For a hundred years, I've searched for the Water of True Wishes to break it."
Lily's heart went out to him. He looked lonely and sad.
"How can we help?" she asked, stepping forward bravely.
The sphinx smiled. "Only someone with a pure heart can find the magical water. You must answer my riddle first: What is invisible but connects all hearts?"
Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "Friendship!"
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Correct!" She waved her paw, and a beautiful fountain appeared, sparkling with blue water that glowed like stars.
Zed stepped into the water. The green faded from his skin, and he transformed into a handsome young man. "Thank you!" he cried. "You've shown me that kindness is the strongest magic."
He bowed to Lily. "I was cursed because I was selfish and wouldn't share my food with hungry travelers. Now I understand—true friends help each other."
Lily learned something important that day: never judge someone by how they look. Even the scariest person might just need a friend.
As she and Max walked home, Lily patted her dog's head. Some adventures teach you the best lessons. And the best magic of all? Being kind to everyone you meet.
