The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily loved to spy on the magic in her grandmother's garden. Every night, she'd creep to her window and watch the old stone sphinx beside the pool. The sphinx had a lion's body, eagle wings, and a kind, mysterious face.
One moonlit night, Lily tiptoed outside. The sphinx's eyes suddenly twinkled like stars.
"Hello, little spy," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I've been waiting for someone who believes."
Lily gasped. "You're alive!"
"Only for those with imagination," the sphinx smiled. "Watch."
She dipped her paw into the pool. The water shimmered like liquid silver. Suddenly, a beautiful goldfish with scales like sunset leaped out—and began to sing!
His voice sounded like bells wrapped in honey. He sang about underwater castles made of pearl, about fish who danced with mermaids, about treasures hidden in coral caves.
"That's Felix," said the sphinx proudly. "He's the last Golden Singing Fish. He shares his songs only with true friends."
Felix splashed back into the pool, then looked at Lily with bright, curious eyes. "Would you like to see my world?"
Lily nodded eagerly. The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with her stone paw. Suddenly, Lily could breathe underwater! She slipped into the cool pool and followed Felix through sparkling blue currents.
They swam past sleeping lily pads and darting minnows. Felix showed her secret grottoes filled with glowing pebbles and ancient treasures.
"True friends share their worlds," Felix sang softly. "Not just their secrets."
When Lily returned to the surface, the sphinx was smiling. "Remember, little spy: magic isn't something to watch from afar. It's something to share with friends."
Every night after, Lily visited her friends. She learned that sphinxes guard ancient wisdom, goldfish know the oldest songs, and pools hold hidden worlds. But most importantly, she learned that magic is best when shared.
Now Lily doesn't spy on magic anymore. She's part of it. And that's the greatest secret of all.
