The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Luna was running through the golden sand, her bare feet pattering like soft rain. Behind her, Mittens the cat pounced and bounced, chasing imaginary butterflies.
"Wait up, Mittens!" Luna laughed, stopping to catch her breath.
That's when she saw it—a magnificent sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise eagle. Its stone feathers shimmered like moonlight.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for a friend."
Luna stepped closer. Mittens hissed, then rubbed against the sphinx's massive paw, purring loudly.
"The Great Sphinx isn't scary," Luna whispered, "but... why are you all alone?"
The sphinx's eagle eyes grew sad. "Everyone runs away because they think I'm a monster. They call me names. They say I'm a zombie—a creature that's neither alive nor dead."
Luna gasped. "That's not true! You're beautiful!"
"Am I?" The sphinx's voice trembled.
Mittens climbed onto the sphinx's shoulder and fell asleep.
"Your cat thinks so," Luna said firmly. "And I think so too. A real friend doesn't run away just because someone looks different. A real friend stays."
The sphinx's stone feathers began to glow, changing from gray to brilliant gold. "Thank you, Luna. You've broken the curse. Loneliness turned me to stone, but friendship has made me whole again."
Luna hugged the sphinx's warm paw. "We can be friends forever. Mittens too."
"Running home will be much faster now," the sphinx winked, "because friends help each other."
And so Luna learned that the scariest monsters are just lonely hearts waiting for someone brave enough to say hello.
The sphinx became the guardian of their friendship, and every evening, Luna would visit. They would watch the stars together—girl, cat, and sphinx—three friends who proved that kindness is the greatest magic of all.
