The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Leo loved exploring behind the old library, where three towering palm trees whispered secrets in the wind. One afternoon, while playing spy with his mother's binoculars, he spotted something extraordinary.
Between the palm trees sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a cat, with emerald-green wings and golden fur. But what amazed Leo most was the creature perched on the sphinx's paw—a glowing goldfish swimming through the air as if it were water!
The sphinx looked lonely. Its wise eyes searched the empty garden.
Leo's heart raced. He should run home, but curiosity made him stay. Carefully, he stepped from his hiding spot.
"Hello," he whispered.
The sphinx's ears perked up. The goldfish did a happy flip in the air.
"I'm Leo," he said, creeping closer. "Are you... real?"
The sphinx nodded solemnly. Then, to Leo's delight, it spoke! "I am Cleo, guardian of magical fish. This is Finny."
Finny the goldfish swam circles around Leo's head, leaving trails of sparkling bubbles.
"I've been so lonely," Cleo admitted. "Humans never stop to notice magic anymore."
"I notice!" Leo promised. "I'll visit every day!"
And he did. Leo learned that Finny could grant one small wish each week—but only for someone with a kind heart. Together, they helped sad children find lost puppies, made shy kids discover their courage, and even helped grumpy old Mr. Henderson remember how to laugh.
Months passed. Leo grew faster and braver, running to visit his friends every afternoon after school. The garden behind the library became their secret kingdom of wonder.
One day, Cleo shared her greatest secret. "We weren't always here, Leo. We came because a child believed in magic enough to see us. That child was you."
Leo grinned. "I'll never stop believing."
And he never did. For sometimes, the most magical adventures begin simply with someone willing to look—and believe.
