The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Mia pushed the green mound around her plate. Spinach again. She sighed.

That night, a strange breeze drifted through her window. Mia followed it to the garden, where a creature waited — a sphinx, but smaller than storybooks said, with soft fur and kind eyes.

"You don't like spinach?" the sphinx asked. "But it's magical food. It lets you see us."

"See who?"

"My best friend." The sphinx's voice wobbled. "She's trapped in the old fountain behind your house. A spell gone wrong."

Mia's heart squeezed. "What kind of friend?"

"A goldfish," said the sphinx. "But not just any goldfish. She's golden like morning sunbeams, and she grants wishes when she's happy."

Mia gasped. "Wishes?"

"One wish. But she hasn't been happy for three hundred years."

The sphinx's whiskers drooped. Mia remembered how she felt when her best friend moved away. That same lonely feeling.

"What's your name?" Mia asked.

"Serafina."

"I'm Mia. And I'm going to help you."

The sphinx's eyes brightened. "But the spell only breaks if someone brave eats spinach and speaks the fish's true name."

Mia's stomach flip-flopped. Spinach. But Serafina's hopeful face made her decision easy.

Back inside, Mia scooped up the spinach. It tasted different this time — like starlight and courage. She felt warm all over, like sunshine in her tummy.

In the garden, Serafina led her to the cracked fountain. Water shimmered inside.

"Her name is Lumina," Serafina whispered.

Mia leaned close. "Lumina?"

The water bubbled. A golden fish surfaced, her scales glittering like diamonds. She swam in happy circles, and suddenly the fountain wasn't old anymore — it was a palace of water and light.

Lumina leaped into the air and became a shower of golden sparkles that swirled around Serafina, then settled on Mia's nose like a freckle of sunshine.

"Thank you," Serafina purred. "What's your wish?"

Mia thought hard. She could wish for anything — toys, adventures, magic powers. But she looked at Serafina's happy face and knew.

"I wish that every kid who has to eat spinach discovers it makes them brave enough to help friends."

Lumina sparkled brighter. The garden filled with golden light.

The next morning, Mia's spinach tasted like adventure. And sometimes, when nobody was watching, she saw Serafina and Lumina playing in the fountain, two best friends together forever.

Mia smiled. Some vegetables were magic after all.
