The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily's feet felt hot against the golden sand. She was in Egypt, visiting the Great Pyramid with her family. The ancient stone rose up like a mountain, mysterious and wonderful.
While her parents took pictures, Lily wandered behind a cluster of rocks. There, she saw something amazing—a small stone sphinx, no bigger than her cat, Mittens, back home. Its tiny paws held a glowing blue stone.
"Hello," Lily whispered.
The sphinx's eyes opened. They were kind and wise. "Hello, young friend. I've been waiting for someone pure of heart."
Lily gasped. "You can talk!"
"I am Sphinx, guardian of secrets," the creature said. "For thousands of years, I've protected something special. But I'm lonely. Will you be my friend?"
"Yes!" Lily said without thinking.
Sphinx smiled. "Then you may see my treasure." He pushed the blue stone, and the ground shimmered like water. Below lay a chamber filled with ancient toys—wooden cats, clay balls, and something that looked remarkably like... an iPhone?
"Is that..." Lily pointed.
"Time travelers left it," Sphinx explained. "From your future. It shows that children everywhere, throughout all time, love to play."
Lily picked it up. The screen showed children from ancient Egypt playing with dolls. Another showed children from the future playing with robots.
"We're not so different, are we?" Sphinx said wisely. "Time changes toys, but friendship stays the same."
Lily understood. She had traveled thousands of miles and made an incredible friend who was thousands of years old.
"I'll come back every year," Lily promised.
Sphinx's eyes twinkled. "And I will be waiting. Remember, the best treasure isn't gold or jewels—it's the friends we make along the way."
As Lily ran back to her parents, she knew this was the best adventure ever. She had discovered something magical: friendship is the greatest treasure of all, and it can happen anywhere, anytime—even between a girl and a tiny sphinx who had been waiting for a friend for thousands of years.
