The Sphinx's Secret Court
Lily loved exploring behind the old community center, where wildflowers grew between cracked pavement stones. One Tuesday afternoon, she chased a bouncing ball past a tangle of vines and discovered something magical – a glowing padel court she'd never seen before.
But the court wasn't empty. A creature sat on a bench, looking very lonely. She had the body of a golden lion, great feathered wings folded neatly, and a wise human face.
"Hello," said Lily bravely. "Are you a sphinx?"
The creature nodded. "I am Cleo. I've guarded this magical court for three hundred years."
"That must be lonely," said Lily.
Cleo sighed. "Very. Everyone runs away when they see me. They think I'll ask them impossible riddles."
Lily sat beside her. "I love riddles! But I'd rather just talk."
Cleo's golden eyes brightened. She reached into her feathers and pulled out a perfect orange. "Would you like some? It's my favorite snack."
They shared the sweet orange, laughing as juice dripped down their chins. Cleo explained she'd created the court hoping children would come play, but her appearance always frightened them away.
"I play padel!" Lily exclaimed. "Want to learn?"
Cleo's wings fluttered with excitement. She'd never been asked to play before.
They played until sunset – Cleo was surprisingly good, using her wings to reach impossible shots. Other children wandered by, saw them laughing, and joined in.
By dusk, Cleo had made five new friends. She realized she didn't need to be scary or mysterious. She just needed to be herself – a sphinx who loved padel, oranges, and most of all, having friends.
"Sometimes," Cleo told Lily, "the scariest-looking creatures just want someone to see who they really are."
Lily hugged her new friend. "And sometimes the best adventures happen when you're brave enough to say hello."
