The Sphinx's Secret Baseball Game
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd grab his glove and ball, heading to the old park behind his house. But today was different.
His orange tabby cat, Mittens, kept meowing and pulling at Leo's shoelaces. She wanted to come too.
"Okay, you can be my mascot," Leo laughed, scooping her up.
At the park, something magical happened. Near the old sandbox, the air shimmered like glittery sunshine. Out popped a sphinx—lion body, human head, giant wings—but this one wore a tiny baseball cap!
"Greetings, young player," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am Sphira. I've watched you practice for weeks."
Mittens hissed, then sniffed the sphinx's paw and purred.
"I know riddles," Sphira continued, "but nobody wants to play with me because they're scared. I've always wanted to learn baseball."
Leo's eyes widened. "Really? I can teach you!"
For an hour, Leo showed Sphira how to hold the bat, how to swing, and how to catch. Mittens chased every ball Sphira hit—some went flying into clouds!
"You're a natural!" Leo cheered when Sphira hit her first home run. It soared over the trees and sparkled like fireworks.
"Thank you, Leo," Sphira said, her wings fluttering happily. "You're my first real friend."
"And you're mine," Leo beamed.
From that day on, whenever Leo played baseball, Sphira appeared with a new ball—some glowed, some changed colors, and one even sang! Mittens became the official team cat, purring loudly at every game.
Leo learned that the best friends aren't always who you expect. Sometimes, they're magical creatures who just need someone to believe in them.
And every time Sphira hit a home run, the whole neighborhood could hear the most magical sound—baseballs chiming like tiny bells in the sky.
