The Sphinx's Secret Baseball Game

Leo hated baseball practice. Every Tuesday, he dropped the ball. Every Thursday, he struck out. But today was different.

Leo's grandma handed him a sandwich. "Eat your spinach," she said. "It'll make you strong."

Leo wrinkled his nose but took a bite. Suddenly, the backyard palm tree began to shimmer. Golden light swirled around its trunk, and a door appeared.

Through the door, Leo found himself on a beach where a giant sphinx sat in the sand. But this sphinx wasn't scary — she wore a baseball cap!

"Welcome, Leo!" the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I've been waiting for someone who believes in magic."

"How do you know my name?" Leo asked, eyes wide.

"I know everything about brave children who try even when it's hard," the sphinx said. "Would you like to play baseball?"

A friendly bear padded out from behind a dune, holding a mitt. "I'm Benny!" the bear cheered. "Play ball!"

Leo couldn't believe it — a talking bear! But when Benny tossed him the baseball, something amazing happened. Leo caught it perfectly. His body felt light and strong, just like Grandma promised.

"The spinach works!" Leo laughed.

For hours, they played under the watchful sphinx. Leo hit home runs, caught every ball, and even taught Benny how to slide into home plate. The sphinx clapped her giant paws and roared with happiness.

"You've always been talented, Leo," the sphinx said as the sun began to set. "You just needed to believe in yourself — and eat your vegetables!"

Leo hugged Benny goodbye. "Will I see you again?"

"Whenever you need courage," the sphinx winked, "just eat your spinach and touch the palm tree."

Back in his yard, Leo grinned at his grandma. "I'm going to be the best baseball player ever — and I'll always eat my spinach!"

That Tuesday, Leo hit three home runs. His coach couldn't believe it. But Leo knew the truth: magic is real, and it grows inside you when you believe in yourself.
