The Sphinx's Secret Baseball

spysphinxbaseball

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, he played outfield for the Thunder Tigers, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. But one sunny afternoon, his favorite baseball disappeared over the old stone wall behind the playground.

Leo climbed over carefully — he didn't want anyone to think he was a spy sneaking around where he shouldn't be. What he found on the other side made his eyes grow huge.

There, resting in a patch of wildflowers, sat the most magnificent statue Leo had ever seen. It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise-looking person. But this sphinx was different. It held a tiny baseball carefully between its stone paws.

"You seek what you lost," the sphinx spoke, its voice sounding like wind through ancient trees. Leo's mouth fell open. The statue was alive!

"I... I need my baseball back," Leo stammered. "My team needs me for the championship game."

The sphinx's golden eyes twinkled. "I have kept your baseball safe for three hundred years. But first, you must answer my riddle."

Leo nodded bravely.

"What has hands but cannot catch, runs but has no feet, and flies through the air but has no wings?"

Leo thought hard. He looked at the sphinx's paws, then at the baseball in its grasp. Suddenly, he smiled. "A clock!"

The sphinx's stone face cracked into a warm smile. "Correct, young one. You are wise beyond your years." It gently placed the baseball into Leo's hands. "Take it, and remember — true champions think with their heads and play with their hearts."

Leo thanked the magical sphinx and hurried back to his game. His team won the championship, and Leo hit two home runs. But the best part? Every time he passed that old stone wall afterward, he would wave. And sometimes, just sometimes, the sphinx would wink back.

Leo never told anyone his secret. Some treasures, he learned, are meant just for you.
