The Sphinx's Secret

Maya's laptop screen glowed at 11:47 PM, illuminating her determined face as she scrolled through Instagram for the third time that night. She was basically a professional social media spy at this point, though her brother would just call it stalking.

The target: Alex Rivera, junior class's answer to the Great Sphinx of Egypt. Beautiful, mysterious, and completely unreadable. Alex posted nothing but artsy photos of coffee cups and vague song lyrics, yet somehow everyone acted like they understood her deep soul.

"You're overthinking it again," her best friend Priya had said earlier that day at lunch. "Just talk to her like a normal person."

Easy for Priya to say. She wasn't the one who'd been lowkey obsessed with Alex since freshman year, watching from afar as Alex moved through the hallways like she was gliding on air. Nothing compared to Alex's hair—this perfect, waist-length cascade of dark curls that somehow always looked effortlessly amazing, even on days when the rest of her outfit suggested she'd rolled out of bed five minutes before class.

But now everything was different. Alex had chopped it all off.

The photo had dropped at 9:03 PM. Alex in her bathroom mirror, sporting a pixie cut that made her cheekbones look sharp enough to cut glass. Caption: "New chapter. Who's reading?"

Maya's fingers hovered over the keyboard. Thirty of their classmates had already commented with variations of "OMG GORGEOUS" and "slay queen" and other basic responses that Alex would probably never answer.

But something about that haircut felt like a message. A sphinx riddle wrapped in a dramatic style change.

Maya typed: "Bold choice. What's the story behind it?"

She stared at the send button. Her heart hammered against her ribs. This was it—either the beginning of something real, or another moment of feeling invisible.

Her thumb pressed down.

Two minutes passed. Then three. Maya was about to close her laptop when the notification popped up.

Alex had replied: "Finally, someone actually asked. Coffee tomorrow?"

Maya fell backward onto her bed, smiling at the ceiling. The sphinx had spoken. And somehow, impossibly, she'd been the one to solve the riddle.
