The Sphinx's Secret

Summer camp was supposed to be chill, but Marcus was spiraling. His roommate Kyle had already mastered the art of being effortlessly cool while Marcus was still trying to figure out which cliques to avoid. The padel courts seemed like foreign territory where everyone else knew the secret handshake.

"You're overthinking it," Kyle said, already dressed for swimming. "Just hit the ball. Don't worry about looking stupid."

Easy for him to say. Kyle was the kind of friend who could stumble into any situation and come out looking like a legend.

That afternoon, Marcus found himself facing the Sphinx—the camp's legendary swim coach with riddle-like instructions and zero tolerance for hesitation. Her real name was Coach Rivera, but everyone called her the Sphinx behind her back. She stood poolside with arms crossed, her expression unreadable.

"New guy," she barked. "Show me what you've got."

Marcus's heart pounded. The swimming pool stretched before him like a challenge he wasn't ready to accept. But then he spotted it—the camp's mascot costume, a giant bear head, lying abandoned near the diving boards.

An idea sparked.

"Coach?" Marcus swallowed hard. "What if I swim with the bear head on?"

The entire pool area went silent. Kyle's eyes went wide. But then the Sphinx's lips twitched.

"You've got guts," she said. "But if you sink, you're on dish duty for a week."

Marcus grabbed the bear head. It was clumsy and ridiculous, but something about playing the fool made everything easier. He dove in, bear head and all, creating the most chaotic splash anyone had ever seen. When he surfaced, sputtering and laughing, half the pool was cracking up.

"Alright," the Sphinx called, suppressing a smile. "Now take it off and show me your real strokes."

That day, Marcus learned that sometimes the best way to fit in was to embrace being the person who'd do something completely unhinged. Kyle high-fived him as they walked back to their cabin.

"Dude," Kyle said, "you might actually survive this summer."

Marcus grinned, chlorine in his hair and bear head under his arm. Maybe camp wasn't so terrifying after all.
