The Sphinx's Secret

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden. It had tall swaying palm trees and a sparkling fountain that splashed cool water into a blue pool. But Lily's favorite spot was behind the old orange tree, where she discovered something amazing one summer afternoon.

A tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten sat perched on a smooth stone. It had the body of a golden cat and wings like a hummingbird. The sphinx blinked its wise eyes at Lily.

"I've been spying on you," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "You're the only one who notices magic here."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"Magic creatures talk to those with magic hearts," the sphinx explained. "I am Solara, guardian of this garden. For many years, I have watched children pass by, but you are different."

Lily felt her heart race with excitement. "What's your secret?"

Solara dipped her paw into the water and suddenly the fountain showed amazing scenes—a boy flying on moonbeams, a girl dancing with fireflies, children laughing on clouds.

"These are the dreams of children who believe," Solara said. "I spy on them to keep their magic safe. But I cannot leave this garden."

Lily thought hard. She remembered the fallen oranges beneath her grandmother's tree. An idea sparked in her mind.

"What if we share the magic with other children?" Lily suggested. "I could bring my friends here, and we could all see the dream fountain together!"

Solara's golden face glowed with happiness. "That would make my magic stronger than ever!"

The next day, Lily brought three friends. Solara showed them all the magical dream visions. They spent the afternoon making wishes and playing beneath the palm trees as the orange sunset painted the sky.

"I spy something wonderful," Lily whispered to Solara as they watched the fountain glow.

"And what do you spy?" asked the sphinx.

"Friends who believe in magic," Lily smiled. "And that's the best kind of magic of all."

Solara nodded wisely. "You have learned my secret, Lily. Magic grows when shared with friends. You are now a guardian too."

From that day on, Lily and her friends visited the garden often. And the tiny sphinx who once spied alone now had many magical friends who helped keep dreams alive.

Every time they left, they placed an orange near the fountain—a symbol of friendship and magic shared. And the sphinx's garden became the most magical place in all the world.
