The Sphinx's Secret
Maya's palms were sweating. Again. She wiped them on her shorts, leaving dark streaks on the fabric. Junior year was supposed to be different—she was supposed to be different. Confident. Smooth. Not the girl who hyperventilated before **padel** matches.
Across the net, Chloe stood like a Greek goddess, her racket swinging lazily. Chloe, who'd somehow become the unofficial **sphinx** of Northwood High—mysterious, untouchable, seemingly knowing everyone's secrets before they even spoke them. Rumor was, she'd hooked up with Tyler at Sarah's party. Rumor was, she'd flunked chem and was getting private tutoring. Rumors were all anyone had.
"You got something in your teeth," Chloe said, tilting her head.
Maya's stomach dropped. She'd literally just eaten. "What?"
"**Spinach**. From lunch probably."
Of course. Because the universe hated her. Maya excused herself and sprinted to the locker room, scraping at her teeth with her fingernail until her gums ached. When she looked up, Chloe was leaning against the doorframe.
"You're not a **spy**, you know," Chloe said softly.
Maya froze. "What?"
"I see you watching me. In history. At lunch. You think I don't notice?" Chloe stepped closer, suddenly less sphinx-like and more... just a girl. "I'm not as mysterious as everyone thinks."
"I—" Maya's face burned. "I wasn't—"
"It's okay." Chloe smiled, and it was weirdly shy. "I was watching you too."
The air between them shifted. Something clicked into place like a puzzle piece Maya hadn't even known was missing.
"Your **palm** line is broken," Chloe added, reaching out and tracing Maya's hand with her finger. "Means you're gonna have a life full of surprises."
Maya looked at their hands, touching now, and thought: yeah. Yeah, she probably was.
"Wanna get food after this?" Chloe asked. "Somewhere without spinach?"
Maya grinned. "I'd love that."
And just like that, the sphinx's riddle was solved. Sometimes the most mysterious things aren't secrets at all—they're just people waiting to be seen.
