The Sphinx's Riddle of Sunset
Lila loved exploring the forest behind her grandmother's cottage. Every afternoon, she'd wander past the babbling brook and climb the tallest oak tree to watch the sky turn brilliant shades of orange as the sun dipped below the hills.
One day, something extraordinary happened. As Lila sat on her favorite branch, a flash of lightning cracked through the clear blue sky—zap!—and out tumbled a magnificent creature onto the grass below.
Lila scrambled down the tree. There, shaking leaves from his golden fur, was a young bull with crescent moons on his horns and eyes that sparkled like stardust.
"Thank you for catching me!" the bull said in a deep, friendly voice. "I'm Barnaby, and I'm terrible at landing."
Before Lila could respond, another flash of lightning illuminated a stone path that hadn't been there before. At the end stood a great sphinx, her lion body proud and strong, her eagle wings spread wide.
"Travelers!" the sphinx called. "Answer my riddle, and you may pass. Fail, and you'll try again tomorrow."
Barnaby trembled. "I'm no good at riddles."
Lila squeezed his furry shoulder. "We'll do it together."
The sphinx smiled warmly. "Here is your riddle: I paint the sky with fire but bring no heat. I arrive without being called and leave without saying goodbye. What am I?"
Lila thought hard. She looked at the sky, now glowing orange and pink. She thought about how colors appeared and disappeared, beautiful and fleeting.
"Sunset!" Lila exclaimed. "You're a sunset!"
The sphinx bowed her majestic head. "Correct, young one. You've discovered that some of life's most beautiful answers are right before your eyes, if only you take time to notice them."
As a reward, the sphinx touched Lila's forehead with her stone paw, and Lila suddenly understood that the best adventures are the ones shared with friends, and the smartest answer you can give comes from observing the world with wonder in your heart.
Barnaby nuzzled Lila's hand. "Friends forever?"
"Friends forever," Lila promised, watching the orange sky fade to stars, already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure.
