The Sphinx's Riddle

Eleanor sat in her favorite armchair, the crossword puzzle open on her lap. Arthur used to call her his sphinx—full of riddles and quiet wisdom—and even after five years without him, the name still made her smile. Today's puzzle was particularly stubborn, just like the technology her granddaughter had brought over.

"Grandma, you just press this button," said Sophie, tapping the iPhone screen with the confidence of seventeen. "See? Now we can FaceTime whenever you want."

Eleanor peered at the glowing rectangle, her reflection looking back at her through a cloud of dust motes dancing in the afternoon light. "Your grandfather would have found this hilarious. Remember our trip to Egypt? We stood before that great pyramid and he said, 'Now that's something that will really last.'"

She chuckled softly. The photograph of them at Giza still sat on the mantelpiece, two young people full of dreams they'd spent a lifetime building together.

"You look like a zombie when you stare at it like that," Sophie teased gently, squeezing Eleanor's hand. "Just give it a try."

"Some days, sweetheart, I do feel a bit like one of those creatures." Eleanor's voice was warm with humor, not bitterness. "All this wisdom accumulated over seventy-two years, and I can't figure out how to video chat. What does that say about the pyramid of knowledge I've built?"

"It says you're smart enough to ask for help." Sophie positioned the phone carefully. "Now say hello to your great-grandson."

The screen lit up with a tiny face—baby Michael, cooing and reaching toward the glass. Eleanor's heart swelled. This was the legacy she and Arthur had truly built, not stones or monuments, but love cascading through generations.

"Hello, little one," she whispered, tears gathering in her eyes. "Your great-grandpapa would have loved seeing you through this magical window."

Later that evening, Eleanor returned to her crossword. The clue was simple: "What endures." The answer came immediately: LOVE. She smiled at the ceiling, as if Arthur might still be listening. His sphinx had solved another riddle, and this time, the answer had been there all along, waiting in the faces of those they'd loved across the years.
