The Sphinx's Riddle

Kate watched from her desk as Jeremy picked through his lunch, separating each leaf of spinach with surgical precision. They'd been friends since graduate school, five years of shared coffees and complaints about academic politics. Now they were both assistant professors, competing for the same tenure track.

"How's the thesis going?" she asked, though she already knew.

He looked up, eyes shadowed. "Sophie's riddles are getting harder."

Sophie - the department head they'd nicknamed Sphinx behind her back. Impossible to read, impossible to please, she held both their careers in her enigmatic hands. Jeremy had been working with her for months, his dissertation research supervised by her inscrutable gaze.

"You've been eating nothing but spinach for weeks," Kate said, pushing aside her own sandwich. "What's really going on?"

Jeremy's fork paused. "I can't tell you."

"Right. Because we're competitors now."

"Because it's complicated."

That night, Kate found Jeremy in the office lab, still there at 11 PM. His monitor displayed Sophie's published papers - twenty years of work on plant genetics and nutritional biochemistry. The spinach connection clicked into place.

"You're trying to solve her unfinished research," Kate realized. "The anti-aging compound she abandoned fifteen years ago."

Jeremy looked exhausted. "She won't help me. She just watches."

The next day, Kate marched into Sophie's office. "Why won't you help him?"

The older woman smiled, cryptic as ever. "What makes you think I'm not helping?"

Kate returned to the lab to find Jeremy staring at his screen, stunned. Sophie had sent him a file - her complete notes on the spinach compound, including the data she'd never published.

"She wasn't testing his research ability," Kate realized. "She was testing his integrity. Whether he'd take credit for her work or build on it."

Jeremy looked up. "She called me a sphinx once. Said I reminded her of herself."

Kate laughed, surprising herself. "Well, at least you'll both be eating spinach forever now."

Months later, when they both received tenure - Kate for her own work, Jeremy for advancing Sophie's research - she understood. The sphinx's riddle was never about the answer. It was about whether you were worthy of asking.
