The Sphinx's Riddle

Elena stared at her reflection in the office water cooler, dark circles under eyes that had seen too many spreadsheets and not enough sunrise. She felt like a zombie—alive only in the technical sense, moving through the corporate pyramid's endless corridors while something essential inside her withered.

The sphinx of HR, Ms. Blackwood, had summoned her to discuss 'performance optimization.' Another riddle wrapped in corporate jargon. Elena had stopped trying to solve them. Last quarter, when the company restructured yet again, three colleagues had been fed to the labyrinthine bureaucracy and never heard from again.

'It's about synergy,' Ms. Blackwood said, her desk arranged with pyramid-shaped crystals and motivational posters. 'We need you to take on more ownership.' Translation: work weekends for the same salary.

Elena thought about the water bill she couldn't pay, the promotion she'd been promised two years ago, the way her mother's voice sounded tinier every time they spoke. She thought about Marcus from accounting, who used to make her laugh during coffee breaks, until he transferred to Chicago and sent exactly one drunk text before disappearing completely.

'The organization needs people who aren't afraid to bleed for this,' Ms. Blackwood continued, watching Elena with predator-calculated patience.

The sphinx's riddle wasn't about synergy at all. It was about sacrifice.

Elena stood up. 'I'm done answering riddles.'

She walked out, leaving her security badge on the desk. Outside, rain fell through the city's grime, washing away the corporate pyramid's sheen. She didn't know where she'd find work, how she'd pay rent, or if Marcus ever thought of her.

But for the first time in years, when she touched water to her face, it felt like something else entirely. Like waking up.
