The Sphinx's Riddle

Lily loved running through her grandmother's orchard, especially on warm Saturday mornings. The papaya trees were her favorite—their fruit hung like golden moons from drooping branches, heavy and sweet-smelling.

That day, something peculiar happened. As Lily reached for the largest papaya she'd ever seen, the ground trembled. From behind the ancient oak tree emerged a magnificent creature—a golden bull with silver horns that shimmered like captured sunlight.

"Who dares touch the sacred papaya?" a voice echoed.

Lily spun around. Perched atop a stone pedestal she'd never noticed before sat a sphinx, its lion body relaxed, eagle wings folded, human face kind and mysterious.

"I... I'm Lily," she stammered, clutching her iPhone tightly. She'd been taking pictures of butterflies.

The sphinx smiled. "Ah, a modern adventurer. I am Sphinxara, guardian of the Magic Papaya Tree. Every hundred years, we choose one brave child to receive its blessing. But first, you must solve my riddle."

Lily's heart raced faster than when she was running races at school.

"I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at her iPhone and suddenly understood! "A map!"

"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her paws together. The golden bull lowered its head respectfully as the magic papaya began to glow. "This fruit grants one wish. Choose wisely."

Lily thought of all the things she wanted—toys, adventures, magical powers. But then she thought about her grandmother, who had trouble walking and couldn't tend the orchard anymore.

"I wish for my grandmother to run through this orchard with me again," Lily said softly.

The papaya burst into golden light, swirling around Lily and the sphinx and the bull before disappearing into the sky.

When Lily returned to the house, her grandmother was waiting at the door, walking without her cane. "Lily!" she called. "Let's go running together!"

From that day on, every time Lily saw a sphinx carved in stone or a golden papaya hanging from a tree, she remembered: kindness and love are the greatest magic of all.
