The Sphinx's Pool Party Riddle

Maya's palms were literally sweating as she stood at the edge of Chloe's backyard pool. The Facebook invite said "pool party" but Maya's brain heard "social suicide." She'd been growing out her hair all year, but now it just looked awkward—halfway between her old pixie cut and the mermaid waves she actually wanted.

"You coming in or what?" called Tyler, the cute sophomore who'd sat next to her in bio since September. His hair was dripping wet, plastering across his forehead in a way that shouldn't look good but absolutely did.

The sphinx of the situation—Chloe, head cheerleader and obvious queen bee—sat on a inflatable throne like she knew something nobody else did. Her blonde hair was perfectly sleek, not a strand out of place. How did people do that? Maya couldn't even walk without tripping over her own feet.

"I'm good," Maya said, even though she was absolutely not good. Her heart was doing that thing where it felt like a bear was trying to break out of her chest cavity.

Chloe slid off her inflatable throne and sauntered over. "Maya, right? You're in my English class." She tilted her head, studying Maya like she was a riddle she couldn't quite solve. "You know, Tyler's been asking about you all week."

Wait. WHAT.

"He literally hasn't?" Maya blurted before her brain could filter.

Chloe laughed, actually laughed. "Girl, I was at his house yesterday when he was stress-texting Jordan about whether to invite you. He's trying to play it cool but he's been obsessed with you since that lab partner thing in October."

The pool water rippled in the background, catching sunlight like tiny diamonds. Maya's hair felt stupid. Her palms felt stupid. This whole situation was...

"So are you gonna get in or what?" Chloe asked, already turning away. "Tyler's about to do a cannonball off the diving board, and he's been waiting for you to notice him for like, six months."

Maya looked at Tyler, who was absolutely pretending not to look at her while very obviously looking at her. She dipped her foot in the water. Cool. Refreshing. Not terrifying.

Okay, maybe a little terrifying.

She took a breath and jumped. The water swallowed her up, loud and chaotic and perfect. When she surfaced, dripping and feeling ridiculously alive, Tyler was grinning like an idiot.

"Finally," he said. "I thought I was gonna have to bear the suspense forever."

Maya wiped her hair out of her eyes. "You're so dramatic, oh my god."

"But you're here now," he said, and for the first time, Maya didn't feel like the awkward girl with the weird hair. She felt like someone who'd just taken a risk and maybe, just maybe, it was about to pay off.
