The Sphinx's Pool Party
Lily splash-hopped into the backyard, her favorite rainbow flip-flops making little splish-splash sounds. It was the hottest day of summer, and the plastic pool in her garden looked like the perfect spot to cool down. But when she peeked over the edge, she gasped. The water wasn't blue anymore—it was swirling with sparkling silver stars, and the bottom of the pool had completely disappeared!
"Curiouser and curiousous," Lily whispered, remembering her favorite book. She dipped one toe in. Instead of getting wet, she whooshed straight through the water like it was made of air!
On the other side, Lily found herself in a magical land with purple palm trees and candy-striped clouds. Sitting on a golden throne was a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. It was a sphinx!
"Welcome, Lily," the sphinx purred gently. "I am Cleo, and I've been waiting for someone brave enough to dive through the pool of wonders. But first, you must solve my riddle: What has no feet but always walks, has no mouth but always talks?"
Lily thought hard, tapping her chin. Then she brightened. "A clock!"
"Correct!" Cleo clapped her paws together. "Now, meet my friend."
From behind a glittering rock shuffled a green creature with stitchy skin and a crooked smile. Lily took a tiny step back—it looked like a zombie!
"Don't be scared," Cleo said softly. "This is Zimby. He's not scary like in stories. He's just lonely. Everyone runs away before they can see his kind heart."
Zimby shuffled closer, holding out a beautiful flower made of sparkling crystals. "For you," he mumbled, smiling shyly.
Lily took the crystal flower. It was the most beautiful thing she'd ever seen. "Thank you, Zimby! Will you play with me?"
The zombie's eyes lit up like tiny stars. For hours, they played hide-and-seek among the purple palms and had the best pool party ever.
When it was time to go, Cleo gave Lily a final riddle: "What's the most powerful magic in all the worlds?"
Lily hugged Zimby goodbye. "Friendship!"
"Indeed," Cleo winked. "Remember, the bravest thing you can do is give someone a chance."
Lily splashed back through the pool, landing safely in her backyard. Her mom called from the kitchen, "Lily, time for dinner!"
But something sparkled in Lily's hand—the crystal flower from Zimby. It was real! And from that day on, whenever she saw someone sitting alone at school, she remembered the zombie with the kindest heart she'd ever known, and she always, always said hello.
