The Sphinx's Palm
Marcus stood at the plate, baseball bat trembling in his hands. Coach Rivera called him Sphinx - always with that half-smile, like she knew something about him he didn't. The rest of the team laughed along, because of course Coach had nicknames for everyone. Tyler was Fox, and if you knew Tyler, you got it. The dude had mastered the art of dodging responsibility while somehow still coming out smelling like roses.
"You're up, Sphinx!" Tyler shouted from the dugout, flashing that grin that got him out of detention twice last week. Marcus adjusted his helmet, sweat already dripping down his temple. Florida summer hit different - palm trees swaying in the distance, humidity wrapping around everything like a wet blanket.
First pitch: swing and a miss. Second: same. The team's quiet murmurs started up. Marcus could feel his face burning worse than the already-blazing sun.
Then lightning split the sky - crack-boom so close everyone flinched. Coach blew her whistle. "Storm's coming! Pack it up!"
As everyone scattered, Tyler sauntered over, shoved his hands in his pockets. "Yo Sphinx, you good?"
Marcus looked at his palm, like somehow the answer might be written there. "Yeah. Just... first game jitters."
"Bro, you've been playing with us for three weeks." Tyler studied him, actually serious for once. "You think we don't see it? You're out here acting like Coach is gonna cut you if you mess up. She literally thinks you're gonna be the team MVP by next season."
Marcus blinked. "She what?"
"Fox sees everything, bro." Tyler fist-bumped him. "Sphinx gotta learn to trust himself sometime."
The storm broke as they jogged to the covered dugout. Marcus watched the rain sheet down, feeling something shift in his chest. Maybe Coach hadn't been mocking him with that nickname. Maybe she'd seen something he hadn't.
Tomorrow's game, he'd swing like he meant it. Sphinx had riddles to solve, but Marcus had baseball to play.
