The Sphinx's Padel Partner
In the middle of the Desert of Whispers stood a very old sphinx. She had the head of a lion and the wings of an eagle, and she had been guarding a magical padel court for three thousand years. Every morning, the sphinx would practice her serves against the stone wall. Thwack! The ball would bounce back. Thwack! Again and again. But it was lonely playing alone.
One evening, a purple lightning storm swept across the desert. Crack! Boom! The sky turned the color of grape jelly. Near the old padel court was a tiny pond, and in that pond lived a goldfish named Finley. Finley had golden scales that shimmered like treasure, and every day she swam in circles watching the sphinx practice.
"I wish I had a friend to play with," the sphinx sighed, holding her magical paddle.
Finley popped her head above water. "I'll play with you!"
"But you're a fish," said the sphinx. "And I'm three thousand years old."
"Age doesn't matter in friendship," said Finley. "And when lightning strikes, I can leave the water for exactly seven minutes."
CRACK! A bolt of lightning hit the sandy ground, and Finley leaped out of the pond, her scales glowing like tiny stars.
The sphinx's eyes widened. "You're magic!"
"All goldfish are," Finley said. "We just never tell anyone."
They played padel together as lightning danced across the sky. Finley was amazing! She could jump higher than the net, swim through the air like she was in water, and hit the ball with her tail. The sphinx laughed for the first time in centuries.
"You're my best friend," the sphinx said when Finley had to return to her pond.
"And you're mine," said Finley. "See you tomorrow!"
Every evening after that, when purple lightning streaked across the desert sky, the sphinx and Finley would play padel together. And the sphinx learned something wonderful: the best friend isn't someone who's exactly like you — it's someone who brings magic into your life, even if they're a tiny goldfish who can leave the water for exactly seven minutes during a lightning storm.
