The Sphinx's Padel Match
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house, especially the mysterious garden behind it. But today she discovered something new — a dusty old padel racket hidden in the shed, painted bright orange like a sunset.
"That belonged to a very special friend," her grandmother whispered with a twinkly smile. "The Sphinx of Sunset Ridge."
Lily's eyes went wide. "A real sphinx?"
"Only if you believe," her grandmother winked.
That afternoon, Lily grabbed her orange racket and climbed to the top of Sunset Ridge. To her amazement, nestled among golden rocks, sat a creature with the body of a lion and the wise face of an owl. Its feathers shimmered in colors of apricot and amber.
"I've been waiting," the Sphinx said gently. "No one has wanted to play padel with me for three hundred years."
Lily's hands trembled, but she gripped her orange racket tight. "I'll play!"
They volleyed back and forth under the peach-colored sky. The Sphinx was graceful and wise, teaching Lily that every shot was like a riddle — you had to think carefully before you answered.
"Why did you wait so long?" Lily asked between serves.
"Because," the Sphinx replied, "the magic only works when hearts are open and curious. Like yours."
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of tangerine and gold, the Sphinx handed Lily a perfect orange from the rocky garden.
"Friendship is like this fruit," the Sphinx said. "Sweet on the inside, but you have to peel away the fear to find it."
Lily promised to return every week. And she did, carrying her orange racket up the ridge, ready for adventure and friendship with her magical Sphinx friend.
Some things, Lily learned, are worth believing in — even when they seem impossible.
