The Sphinx's Orange Secret
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. Rain tapped against the window as she climbed the creaky wooden stairs, her flashlight beam cutting through shadows. Cobwebs hung like silver curtains in the corners.
Then she saw it—a golden pyramid tucked behind an old trunk. It glowed softly, about the size of a shoebox. Strange symbols covered its surface, shimmering like tiny stars.
Lily reached out. Her finger touched the golden peak.
WHOOSH!
The attic spun away like autumn leaves in the wind. Lily found herself standing on warm sand under a sky painted with swirling colors of pink and purple. Before her rose a giant pyramid made entirely of crystal, sparkling like a million diamonds.
"Who dares wake the ancient guardian?"
Lily turned slowly. A sphinx sat beside her—the body of a golden lion, the wings of an eagle, and the wise face of a woman with eyes like molten chocolate. But this sphinx wore a flower crown and held something in her paw.
An orange.
Not just any orange—the brightest, most perfect orange Lily had ever seen. Its skin glowed like a tiny sun.
"I'm Lily," she whispered, half afraid, half amazed.
The sphinx smiled. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Crystal Pyramid. For a thousand years, I have waited for someone worthy to share my treasure with."
"Your treasure?" Lily's eyes widened. "Is it gold? Jewels? Magic wishes?"
Cleo laughed, a sound like wind chimes. She split the orange with her sharp claw. Juice dripped, smelling like sunshine and summer. She handed Lily half.
"The treasure is inside," Cleo said. "This orange grows from the last seed of the Great Sun Tree. It grants one wish to the pure of heart."
Lily bit into her orange slice. It was the sweetest thing she had ever tasted—honey and sunshine and happiness all mixed together.
"What would you wish for, little one?" Cleo asked gently.
Lily thought about all the things she could want. A room full of toys? The ability to fly? To be the smartest student in her class?
She looked at Cleo, who had guarded this treasure alone for a thousand years.
"I wish," Lily said, "that you had a friend to share your oranges with. Everyone deserves someone."
Cleo's eyes filled with tears like tiny pearls. She wrapped Lily in a warm hug.
"You have wished not for yourself," Cleo whispered, "but for another. You have a heart of gold, Lily."
WHOOSH!
Lily blinked. She was back in the attic, flashlight still in hand. The golden pyramid sat on the floor, and in her pocket sat a perfect orange, glowing softly like a tiny sun.
Sometimes, she realized, the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
