The Sphinx's Orange Pyramid
Kai's heart hammered like a bass drop at homecoming. The gym smelled like desperation and cheap body spray—classic Friday night energy. He stood before the Sphinx, that ancient stone monstrosity the drama club had dragged onto the stage for the annual fundraiser. Paint it gold, they said. It'll be chill, they said. Now he was stuck here alone while everyone else was at Tyler's party, probably living their best lives.
"Total bull," he muttered, adjusting his spray paint mask. The Sphinx stared back with that cryptic smile, like it knew something he didn't.
Maya appeared beside him, carrying a tray of oranges from the snack booth. Her hair was that perfect messy-curly, and Kai's stomach did that embarrassing flip thing it always did when she was around. "Still grinding on the Sphinx? I thought you'd be running to Tyler's by now."
"Nah, someone's gotta finish this masterpiece." Kai gestured at the half-painted statue. "Besides, parties aren't really my vibe."
Maya smirked. "Yeah, I've noticed. You're more of a observer-type. Like, you see things others don't."
She handed him an orange. Kai almost fumbled it because his hands were suddenly not cooperating. "Thanks."
"So here's the thing," Maya said, leaning against the stage. "I wasn't gonna go to Tyler's either. His parties are always awkward as hell, and I'd rather be here doing something that actually matters." She paused. "But I didn't wanna come alone."
Kai's brain short-circuited. Was she saying what he thought she was saying? "So you... waited for me?"
"I mean, I knew you'd still be here." Maya peeled her own orange. "You're the only person who'd take the Sphinx assignment seriously. That's kinda your thing—commitment to weird stuff."
Kai felt himself smiling. "We should build an orange pyramid. Like, a tribute to our shared non-coolness."
Maya laughed, and it was the best sound Kai had heard all year. "Let's do it. But first—help me finish this Sphinx. I've got riddles it needs to solve."
They spent the next hour painting gold together, fingers accidentally touching, conversation flowing easier than Kai had ever experienced. The Sphinx watched them with that knowing smile, and for the first time, Kai felt like he wasn't missing out on anything at all.
