The Sphinx's Orange Pool
Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. Every night, he would gaze at the stars and wonder what magical adventures lay beyond his cozy forest home.
One warm afternoon, while exploring a hidden part of the woods, Barnaby discovered something extraordinary. Tucked between ancient trees was a pool—but not just any pool. The water shimmered with a brilliant orange glow, as if captured sunlight itself.
"Who dares approach my sacred pool?" A voice rumbled like distant thunder.
Barnaby froze. From behind the pool emerged a sphinx—half lion, half eagle, with wise eyes that had seen countless summers pass.
"I... I'm Barnaby," the bear squeaked. "I didn't mean to intrude."
The sphinx's stern expression softened. "Few bears find their way here. This orange pool grants one wish to those pure of heart—but first, you must answer my riddle."
Barnaby's trembled, but he nodded bravely.
"I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"
Barnaby thought hard. He remembered his mother showing him something special by candlelight. His eyes lit up.
"A map!"
"Correct," the sphinx purred. "You may make your wish."
Barnaby looked at the magical orange water. He could wish for honey that never ended, or a cave full of treasures. But then he thought of his friend Lily, a young fox who couldn't run and play like the others.
"I wish for my friend Lily to be able to run and dance with us."
The sphinx smiled, and the orange water sparkled brighter than ever. "A true heart wishes for others before itself. Your gift shall be granted."
That evening, when Barnaby returned home, Lily was waiting—and she could run! The forest friends danced under the stars, and Barnaby knew that the greatest magic wasn't in wishes granted, but in wishes shared.
