The Sphinx's Orange Pool
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's old house. One sunny afternoon, she pushed through a tangle of vines and discovered something magical—a crystal-clear pool that shimmered like liquid sunshine. But what made her gasp was the creature resting beside it.
It was a small sphinx, no bigger than a golden retriever, with soft sandy fur and gentle hazel eyes. Unlike the scary sphinxes in storybooks, this one looked lonely.
"Hello," Lily whispered.
The sphinx's ears perked up. "Hello, child. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my secret pool."
"Why is it orange?" Lily asked, pointing to the pool's glowing orange tint.
The sphinx smiled. "It's made from fallen oranges that grew here long ago. Their magic mixed with the spring water. One touch, and anything you place inside becomes your heart's desire—but only if your intentions are pure."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything! But then she noticed how sadly the sphinx watched her.
"What would YOU wish for?" Lily asked.
The sphinx looked surprised. "No one has ever asked me that. I've guarded this pool for three hundred years, always granting others' wishes. I suppose... I wish for a friend."
Lily's heart swelled. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her favorite orange marble—the one she brought everywhere for luck.
"I don't need a wish," she said, dropping the marble into the glowing pool. "I already have what matters."
The pool rippled with golden light. When the water cleared, her marble had become a beautiful orange crystal, pulsing with warmth. She picked it up and handed it to the sphinx.
"Now we're friends forever," Lily said. "And every time you look at this, you'll remember: the best magic isn't about getting what you want. It's about sharing what you have."
The sphinx's eyes shone brighter than the pool itself. For the first time in three hundred years, the guardian of the orange pool wasn't lonely anymore.
And neither was Lily.
