The Sphinx's Orange Magic

Lily loved running through the garden after school, her sneakers crunching on fallen leaves. One autumn afternoon, she spotted something peculiar near the old oak tree—a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, just like in her storybook.

"Hello there," said the sphinx gently. "I've been waiting for someone kind to find me."

Lily's eyes widened. "You're real! But why are you here?"

The sphinx sighed, her golden fur shimmering in the sunlight. "My friend—" she pointed toward the woods—"has been under a sleepy spell for a hundred years. Everyone calls him a zombie because he walks so slowly and never speaks. But he's really just lonely and trapped in the magic."

Lily's heart went out to the poor creature. "How can we help?"

"I need something magical to wake him," the sphinx explained. "Something filled with sunshine and sweetness. An orange from the enchanted tree, picked exactly at sunset."

Without hesitation, Lily started running toward the forest edge where the glow of sunset painted everything golden. There, she found a small orange tree with one perfect fruit glowing as if it held a piece of the sun inside.

She picked it carefully and ran back, the orange warm in her hands. Together, she and the sphinx approached the sleeping figure—a gentle giant with moss on his shoulders and kindness in his closed eyes.

The sphinx whispered some magic words, and Lily placed the orange in his hand. As juice from the orange touched his palm, color returned to his cheeks. His eyes opened, sparkling like morning dew.

"Thank you," he said, his voice rusty from a hundred years of silence. "I dreamed someone would come."

That day, Lily learned that things aren't always what they seem, and that kindness is the most powerful magic of all. And every afternoon, you could find her running through the garden again, visiting her two new friends who taught her that friendship can wake even the sleepiest hearts.
