The Sphinx's Orange Lightning

In a desert where the sand shimmered like gold dust, there lived a young sphinx named Cleo. Unlike the old grumpy sphinxes who sat on stone pedestals asking impossible riddles, Cleo had bright orange fur that glowed like sunset. She loved two things: rolling down sandy dunes and collecting interesting rocks.

One afternoon, while Cleo was practicing her pounce on a particularly delicious-looking beetle, the sky turned purple. Lightning crackled—not the usual yellow lightning, but orange lightning that smelled like citrus and made Cleo's whiskers tingle.

The orange lightning zigzagged down and zapped right into Cleo's favorite pile of rocks. Suddenly, the rocks began to hum and wiggle.

"I'm free!" squeaked the smallest rock, which had grown tiny legs.

Cleo gasped. "You can talk?"

"I'm not a rock," the creature said. "I'm a lightning pixie!"

The truth emerged—these were lightning pixies trapped in stone form by a jealous wizard. They needed orange lightning to break free, and Cleo's territory had the only orange lightning in the world.

But the wizard appeared in a swirl of dark smoke. "Those pixies belong to me! They power my tower!"

Cleo's heart pounded. She could let the wizard take the pixies back, or she could use her special connection to orange lightning to help them escape forever.

The pixies looked at Cleo with hopeful eyes.

Cleo made her choice. She summoned every ounce of her courage and roared—a sphinx roar that called down the biggest bolt of orange lightning anyone had ever seen. It didn't zap anyone. Instead, it created a sparkling orange bridge that carried the pixies far away to safety.

The wizard howled in frustration but couldn't cross the orange bridge.

"Thank you, Cleo!" the pixies called, now glowing like tiny orange stars in the distant sky.

From that day on, whenever Cleo felt lonely, she would look up and see her friends twinkling orange in the night sky. And sometimes, just sometimes, they would send down little orange lightning bolts to say hello, turning regular storms into magical light shows just for her.
