The Sphinx's Orange Lightning

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. Rain pattered on the roof as she rummaged through old trunks and dusty boxes. Her grandmother called it her treasure hunt room.

Behind a stack of books, Lily spotted something glowing. She pushed them aside and gasped. A tiny stone sphinx no bigger than her hand sat on a velvet pillow. Its emerald eyes sparkled like captured starlight.

"Hello there," Lily whispered.

The sphinx stretched its stone paws. "Hello, Lily. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Lily jumped back. "You can talk?"

"I can do much more," the sphinx said mysteriously. "Would you like to see something magical?"

She nodded eagerly.

The sphinx extended one small stone paw. In its palm appeared the brightest orange Lily had ever seen—not just a color, but glowing light shaped like a tiny fruit. This orange light crackled and sparked like miniature lightning.

"What is it?" Lily breathed.

"Courage condensed into light," the sphinx explained. "Every time someone brave faces their fears, a new spark appears. I keep them safe."

Lily watched the orange lightning dance between the sphinx's paws. "But why do you need them?"

"Because courage is meant to be shared, not hoarded." The sphinx climbed onto Lily's shoulder, its stone body surprisingly warm. "Come with me. There's someone who needs this light."

Outside, the storm had passed. Rainbow light stretched across the sky. The sphinx guided Lily through her garden to where a baby bird had fallen from its nest, shivering and afraid.

"The little one is frightened," the sphinx said softly. "It needs courage to try flying again."

Lily understood. She cupped her hands around the orange lightning as the sphinx placed it gently in her palm. The light warmed her skin like sunshine.

She leaned close to the baby bird. "You can do this," she whispered, and blew the orange courage-light toward it.

The bird fluffed its feathers, eyes growing bright. It spread its wings and launched into the sky, soaring higher and stronger than before.

The sphinx purred happily. "You see, Lily? True courage isn't about being fearless. It's about helping others find their own bravery."

Lily smiled as the sphinx curled up in her pocket. She had discovered that the best magic wasn't in ancient artifacts or glowing lights—it was in kindness shared between friends, big and small.
