The Sphinx's Orange Hair
Lily loved exploring the mysterious forest behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she discovered something amazing—a magnificent stone creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. It was a sphinx!
The sphinx had the most beautiful orange hair Lily had ever seen. It flowed like a river of sunset, shimmering with gold and copper highlights. When the sunlight touched it, tiny rainbows danced everywhere.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone with a curious heart."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "Your hair is magnificent!"
The sphinx smiled warmly. "Thank you. It wasn't always orange, you know. It changes color based on the kindness I receive from visitors. Most people run away when they see me, so it was gray and lonely for a very long time."
"That's sad," Lily said softly. "But why orange now?"
"Because," the sphinx whispered, "you approached me with wonder, not fear. Your heart is full of sunshine, just like this orange tree beside me. Would you like an orange? They're the sweetest in the world."
The sphinx offered Lily a perfect orange fruit from a nearby tree. As Lily accepted it with both hands, she noticed the sphinx's hair glowed even brighter.
"Every act of friendship adds more color," the sphinx explained. "When someone stays to talk instead of running, when someone shares instead of taking, when someone asks questions instead of making assumptions—that's when the magic happens."
Lily sat and ate her orange while the sphinx told stories of ancient times. They laughed together, and Lily promised to visit often. As she headed home, she looked back to see the sphinx's orange hair glowing like a beacon of friendship.
From that day on, Lily learned that the most beautiful colors come from kindness, courage, and seeing the wonder in everyone—even those who might seem different at first glance. And every time she visited, the sphinx's hair shone brighter, proving that friendship is the most powerful magic of all.
