The Sphinx's Orange Gift
In a garden where moonflowers bloomed at night and sunflowers danced by day, there lived a small sphinx named Cleo. Unlike the ancient stone sphinxes you might read about, Cleo had soft orange fur that glowed like sunset, and instead of asking terrifying riddles, she asked wonderful ones.
"What makes clouds float?" she'd wonder aloud. "Where do butterflies go when it rains?"
Cleo's best friend was Barnaby, a gentle brown bear who loved honey almost as much as he loved Cleo's questions. Every afternoon, they sat by the garden pond.
One day, a tiny goldfish named Pearl popped her head above the water. "Someone's stolen my sparkle!" Pearl cried. "The moon gave it to me last night, and now it's gone!"
Cleo's orange ears perked up. "We'll help you find it!"
Barnaby nodded, already lumbering to his feet. "But where should we look first?"
"Follow the orange butterflies," Cleo said wisely. "They always know where magic hides."
The three friends set off. Pearl swam alongside the pond's edge while Cleo and Barnaby followed a trail of orange butterflies deeper into the garden. They searched beneath bushes and behind flowers until Cleo spotted something glinting.
"There!" she cried.
A mischievous pixie sat nearby, holding Pearl's moon-sparkle like a marble. "I only wanted to see how it felt to shine," the pixie said sadly. "My light went out long ago."
Cleo thought for a moment. Then she did something surprising. She plucked an orange blossom from a nearby tree and placed it gently in the pixie's hand. "Pearl's sparkle comes from sharing it with others. But this flower's light comes from within—just like yours does."
The pixie's eyes widened as tiny sparks began to flicker around her. She smiled and returned Pearl's sparkle. "Thank you, Cleo. I forgot I had my own light all along."
That night, Pearl shone brighter than ever, Barnaby shared his honey, and Cleo discovered something new: the best riddles aren't the ones we ask, but the ones we answer by helping others. And sometimes, the smallest sphinx with the biggest heart can light up the whole world.
